The Memory Keeper by Jennifer Camiccia

All Lulu Carter wants is to be seen. But her parents are lost in their own worlds, and Lulu has learned the hard way that having something as rare as HSAM—the ability to remember almost every single moment in her life—won’t make you popular in school.

At least Lulu has Gram, who knows the truth about Lulu’s memory and loves her all the more for it. But Gram has started becoming absentminded, and the more lost she gets, the more she depends on Lulu…until Lulu realizes her memory holds the very key to fixing Gram’s forgetfulness. Once Lulu learns that trauma can cause amnesia, all she needs to do to cure Gram is hunt down that one painful moment in Gram’s life.

With her friends Olivia and Max, Lulu digs into Gram’s mysterious past. But they soon realize some secrets should stay buried, and Lulu wonders if she ever knew Gram at all. It’s up to Lulu to uncover the truth before the only person who truly sees her slips away.

Snacks

  • Hot chocolate and cinnamon roll (Page 320: “I sip my hot chocolate and nibble at the cinnamon roll she’s made.”)

Activities

  • Play a memory game -- I gave the girls 3 pages (to open one at a time) for a memory game. For the first paper, they had one minute to study the words on the page. After one minute was up, they set aside that paper and had to answer the questions on page number two to see what they remembered. Then the answer key was on page 3 so they could check their answers. Several girls got 0-4 correct; the highest score was 13. It was a fun activity that I got from this website: https://www.word-game-world.com/support-files/printable-memory-games-wall1.pdf
  • Make a memory book -- I used the idea from a website to make little notebooks out of cereal boxes and paper. I did the initial steps of prepping the cereal boxes and paper (including poking the holes), and then the girls sewed the book together with a big needle and embroidery thread. Then they decorated the covers. You can see what I mean at this website: https://medium.com/@hccb/diy-notebooks-journals-kids-6baad6495a09
