From the Desk of Zoe Washington by Janae Marks

Dear Marcus...

Zoe Washington isn’t sure what to write next. What does a girl say to the father she’s never met, hadn’t heard from until his letter arrived on her twelfth birthday, and who’s been in prison for a terrible crime?

A crime he says he never committed.

Could Marcus really be innocent? The truth is somewhere out there, and Zoe is determined to uncover it. Even if it means hiding his letters and her investigation from her mom and stepdad. Everyone else thinks Zoe’s worrying about doing a good job at her bakery internship, and proving to her parents that she’s worthy of auditioning for Food Network’s Kids Bake Challenge. It’s been Zoe’s dream to become a star baker, and she can’t afford to mess anything up. Her best friend and neighbor Trevor would’ve been her confidante through all this, but Zoe’s not speaking to him anymore. She’ll have to figure this out alone.

With bakery confections on one part of her mind, and Marcus’s conviction weighing heavily on the other, this is one recipe Zoe doesn’t know how to balance. The only thing she knows to be true: Everyone lies. This captivating novel by debut author Janae Marks follows one courageous girl as she questions assumptions, searches for the truth, and does what she believes is right, even in the face of great opposition.

Snacks
  • Froot Loop cupcake (Page 157: “I’d make cereal milk cupcakes….All I’d have to do was swap out the regular milk for the Froot Loops–flavored milk.”) Recipe from Janae Mark's website.

  • Salt and pepper chips (Page 77: “Grandma got pink lemonade tea for both of us, plus chicken salad sandwiches with salt-and-pepper chips.”)

  • Peanut M&Ms (Page 276-277: “I took the change from Grandma and went to the vending machine….I finally decided on peanut M&M’s.”)

  • We ate the chips and M&Ms together. Page 280: Zoe: “Hey, do you like sweet or savory foods better?” Marcus: “You know, I like a mix of both. I used to always like eating candy and chips at the same time.”

Activities
  • Little Tomato playlist -- We listened to some of the songs from the Little Tomato playlist (songs Marcus recommended to Zoe in the book). The author, Janae Marks, has compiled the songs on a playlist on her website.
  • Create a pizza and cupcake -- Just like Zoe had a favorite unique pizza (Hawaiianish, or pepperoni and pineapple) and a cupcake she created (Froot Loop cupcake), the girls created their own idea for a pizza and a cupcake.

  • Decorate a composition notebook -- Zoe and her friends had a notebook that they used to write notes to each other, and they decorated the cover with quotes or pictures from magazines or the internet. I gave each girl a stack of pages from magazines, and then cut pictures out to glue on their cover. When they were finished, they covered it with a layer of mod podge.
